God Bless America

Thanks goes to my friend Bob for this piece of musical history!

Frank Sinatra considered Kate Smith the best singer of her time, and said that when he and a million other guys first heard her sing "God Bless America" on the radio, they all pretended to have dust in their eyes as they wiped away a tear or two.
Here are the facts.... The link at the bottom will take you to a video showing the very first public singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA". But before you watch it, you should also know the story behind the first public showing of the song.
The time was 1940. America was still in a terrible economic depression. Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were afraid   we'd have to go to war. It was a time of hardship and worry for most Americans.
This was the era just before TV, when radio shows were HUGE, and
American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to their favorite entertainers, and no entertainer of that era was bigger than Kate Smith.
Kate was also large; plus size, as we now say, and the popular phrase still used today is in deference to her, "It ain't over till the fat lady sings".
Kate Smith might not have made it big in the age of TV, but with her
voice coming over the radio, she was the biggest star of her time. Kate was also patriotic. It hurt her to see Americans so depressed and afraid of what the next day would bring. She had hope for America, and faith in her fellow Americans. She wanted to do something to cheer them up, so she went to the famous American song-writer, Irving Berlin (who also wrote "White Christmas") and asked him to write a song that would  make Americans  feel good again about their country. When she described what she was looking for, he said he had just the song for her. He went to his files and found a song that he had written, but never published, 22 years before - way back in 1917. He gave it to her and she worked on it with her studio orchestra. She and Irving Berlin were not sure how the song would be received by the public, but both agreed they would not take any profits from God Bless America. Any profits would go to the Boy Scouts of America. Over the years, the Boy Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties from this song.
This video starts out with Kate Smith coming into the radio studio with the orchestra and an audience. She introduces the new song for
the very first time, and starts singing. After the first couple verses, with her voice in the background still singing, scenes are shown from the 1940 movie, "You're In The Army Now." At the 4:20 mark of the video you see a young actor in the movie, sitting in an office, reading a paper; it's Ronald Reagan.
To this day, God Bless America stirs our patriotic feelings and pride
in our country.  Back in 1940, when Kate Smith went looking for a song to raise the spirits of her fellow Americans, I doubt whether she realized just how successful the results would be for her fellow Americans during those years of hardship and worry..... and for many generations of Americans to follow.
Now that you know the story of the song, I hope you'll enjoy it.
Many people don't know there's a lead in to the song since it usually starts with "God Bless America ....." So here's the entire song as originally sung.....  ENJOY!

BLUE LIGHTS IN MY REARVIEW WINDOW

I was helping my Kentuckianna kids move last night. Jay was in the Tahoe with me, and we were following behind Kim and Elliot's truck. We were driving on the Kentucky side of the Ohio river around 10:30pm, on a two lane highway, in the dark, in below freezing temps.
An hour or so before, my daughter texted to let me know she was in her first fender bender. She was alright, it was the other drivers fault, and my girl was her delightful self, making sure the other driver was at ease. She is so good!
My Kentuckianna girls and I were then talking about being pulled over by the police when I made the comment that I wasn't sure were my registration actually was.
Fast forward to 10:30 on the dark country road....
When in my rearview mirror I see blue lights flashing. Yep, they were for me! I pulled over, and then greated the nice young man in the uniform. He asked for my drivers license and registration. (Which, instinctively I knew just where to reach for when the moment presented itself.) As I handed it to him, I asked what he pulled me over for. He looked in the Tahoe and asked "Are you moving?" I said yes, and he said "As I passed you over that hill you swerved." Now I don't recall that but, it was windy, cold, dark and late. He was right I am sure. And "No" to his question; I hadn't been drinking. We chatted for a minute longer and he handed my verification back. No ticket or warning, I thanked him for checking on us, and he wished us a good night. He was nice. We took a short cut back to the kids place, and I was in my bed by midnight.
Interesting evening!

It's Snowing!

HOLIDAY CONCERT

I attended the Holiday Pops Concert at the
Victory Theater last night.
There were several orchestras and several choirs.
It was amazing to see how many instruments
and people they could get on the stage.
The choreography in moving everything
in and out throughout the show was wonderful.
The Victory Theater is beautiful. The inside is glorious.
It takes you back to a more amazing era.
The Christmas decorations were lovely
and seeing Santa was an extra treat.
It was a perfect way to spend a
wintery December night with friends!

VACATION

Vacation: an extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or traveling.

I had the opportunity to go on a nine day vacation. I had moments of doubt and worry prior to going. (I am grateful for my man who talked me off the cliff when those moments hit.)
Once I was there, I was so very happy to have returned to my home town to spend my vacation. I saw those I love and adore...and was very grateful for the time and effort they made to see me, spend time with me and make me feel at home. I was blessed to meet my son's lady and love of his life. I fell in love with her too. I was so lucky to be able to spend time with her family as well. I truly adore them and I am tickled to be able to call them family.
I was able to see friends that have missed. It was so nice catching up with them and I am inspired to keep in closer contact from here forward.
Phoenix was just the same...but better. So much new mixed in with the old. I saw all the places I love and visited all the have to spots!
It was fun checking in on FB at each place I went. A traveling road map so to speak.
I tried to look at Phoenix through the eyes of a tourist, a new prospective. I love it there. I really do.
I had a great vacation, but part of me couldn't wait to come home. Back to the part of the country I chose...that I love. I was even excited to come back to work.
Phoenix may be my home town, but this bit of the Midwest I am living in, is my home!

PHOENIX TRIVIA

Phoenix has an average annual rainfall of only 7.6 in/19 cm, and it enjoys around 325 sunny days per year.
Phoenix is on Mountain Standard Time and never moves the clock forward or back for daylight saving time. Only the Navajo Nation observes the time change in Arizona.
Phoenix is the sixth-largest city in the U.S. and the largest state capital.
About one in three of Phoenix's residents play at least one round of golf a year.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open is the most highly attended event on the PGA Tour, attracting more than a half-million spectators each year.
In 1950, Phoenix covered 17 sq mi/44 sq km. Today it covers almost 500 sq mi/1,295 sq km, an area larger than Los Angeles.
Phoenix has more sunshine than any other metropolitan area in the U.S. The sun shines 85% of the time during daylight hours in Phoenix.

Six Years Ago Today

Yesterday I learned
that taking inventory
of what you want is good.
You may be working at
something that down deep
you really don't want,
it was just the
Next thing on your list.
Let it go,
reevaluate
and move forward!

2 Years Ago Today

Two years ago today it snowed in Kentucky. I remember it being the most beautiful day.
Then I headed to work, hit black ice, and my car flipped in a ditch. It was a very scary day.
I felt utterly alone. Then swarms of people were there. There was help all around me.
It was the longest scary beautiful day I hope to ever remember.

Over The River and Through The Woods

Tonight there will be a Super Moon.
It will appear bigger and brighter tonight than it will until 2034.
The last two nights I drove home from Owensboro at sunset.
The moon was so bright as I drove through the woods, just Beautiful.
As I drove over the twin bridges,
the reflection on the Ohio River was spectacular!
I wished I could just stop right there
on the bridge and take a photo or two.
I love the romance of the heavens.... Amazing!!!

I VOTED

I still think if we could have Julie Andrews for president, with Dick Van Dyke for vice, and Judge Judy for Sec. of State; our nation would grow some manners, regain our morals, get back to the path of greatness, re-establish patriotism, national solidarity, national pride and community motivation. All while becoming a more delightful and well behaved group of people.
They would have not just my vote, but my support and loyalty.

Little Goblins Ten by Pamela Jane

Over in the forest where the trees hide the sun lived
a big mommy monster and her little monster one.
"Scare!" said the mommy; "I scare!" said the one.
So he scared and he scampered where the trees hide the sun.

Over in the forest where the Spooks shout "Boo!"
Lived a pale daddy ghost and his little ghosties two.
"Haunt!" cried the daddy, "We Haunt!"  the cried two.
So they hid and they haunted where the Spooks shout "Boo!"

Over in the forest near a gnarled oak tree.
Lived an old mother zombie and her little zombies three.
"Stare!" said the mommy; "We stare!" said the three.
So they stared all together near the gnarled oak tree.

Over in the forest where the fierce winds roar.
Lived a gray father wolf and his little wolfs four.
"Howl!" said the father; "We howl!" said the four.
So they howled and they growled where the fierce winds roar.

Over in the forest where the shadows come alive.
Lived an old mother mummy and her little mummies five.
"Moan!"said the mother; "We moan!' said the five.
So they moaned and they groaned where the shadows come alive.

Over in the forest int a hovel made of sticks.
Lived an old mother witch and her little witches six.
"Cackel!" screeched the mother; "We cackle!" screeched the six.
So they crowd and they cackled in the hovel made of sticks.

Over in the forest in a mossy green heaven.
Lived a scaly father dragon and his little dragons seven.
"Breath!" said the father; "We breath!" said the seven.
So they breathed flames of fire in the mossy green heaven.

Over in the forest by the graveyard gate.
Lived a boney father skeleton and his little skellies eight.
"Rattle!" said the father; "We rattle!" said the eight.
So they rattle and they ran by the graveyard gate.

Over in the forest near a tall dark pine.
Lived a furry mother bat and her little batties nine.
"Swoop!" said the mother; "We swoop!" cried the nine.
So they swooped in the shadows near the tall dark pine.

Over in the forest in a deep green glen.
Live an old father goblin and his little goblins ten.
"Leap!" said the father; "We leap!" said thbe ten.
So they laughed and they leaped in the deep green glen.

Over in the forest where the trees hide the sun,
the big mommy monster called to her little monster one.
"Trick or Treat?" asked the mommy; "Treat!" cried the one.
So they skipped off together for some Halloween fun.

October's Full Moon

Some Native American tribes referred to this month's full moon as the Hunter’s Moon. After September's Harvest Moon, it was a time to hunt to continue preparations for the long winter. It is also known as the Travel Moon or the Dying Grass Moon. The moon rises just after sunset and sets at sunrise, so this is the only night in the month when the moon will be visible all night long. It's near perigee (closest to Earth) so it should appear very large. I hope you get a chance to take a look! I am an early riser, so this morning's walk was very bright indeed. Dr. A. Weil

The full moon is tonight!

The Dynamics

I turned the tv on, for background noise, as I started dinner and a load of laundry. I noticed that Wheel of Fortune was on. So I popped in the living room every few minutes, to see what was happening. It was then that my whole world slid sideways..... I learned that I have no idea how
The Wheel of Fortune works! I watched for a few more minutes... I knew they bought letters, and
then they try to guess the words. But when they kept asking for more letters and it kept going and going....I realized I don't have a clue about the Wheel of Fortune dynamics.
I also learned that I'm just fine with this!

My Concrete Definition

Happiness is:

Being in tune with my inner self
(having that inner contentment with self)
Being cheerful with myself and others
    (focusing on the positive)
Having my needs met
   (love, friendship, daily life needs)
Moving forward toward the future
   (interests and goals).

Three things that make me happy:
1. Being with my best friend
2. Spending time with my children
3. Adventures (enjoying my surroundings,
going new places & seeing new things)

THE FUNDAMENTAL HAPPINESS PARADOX

By Prof. Raj

It was a warm and sultry afternoon in mid-September when my cousin, who was fresh off the boat from India, and I strolled into a salad bar in Austin, TX.

“How does the salad bar concept work?,” asked my cousin.

“Well, you just load your plate with the things that you want to eat,” I said, pointing to the various items on display on the bar, “and once you are done, you carry your plate to the person sitting at the checkout counter and pay $5.99 per pound. Then you join me and start eating.”

My cousin looked at the items in the salad bar. It was a typical salad bar with many vegetarian options (onions, tomatoes, lettuce, olives, chickpeas) and some non-vegetarian ones (bacon crumbles, ham pieces, grilled chicken).

“You mean, I pay $5.99 per pound regardless of what I put on my plate?,” asked my cousin, his eyes bulging. He wasn’t used to the salad bar concept.

“Yes, it’s $5.99 per pound regardless of what you put on your plate,” I confirmed, “but today you don’t pay—the meal’s on me.”

I knew exactly what my cousin was thinking. He, like many people, was price-sensitive. He recognized that, pound for pound, the non-vegetarian items were more expensive than the vegetarian ones. This would tempt him to load his plate with the non-vegetarian items. But doing so would come at a cost to his enjoyment of the salad. He didn’t eat bacon and he didn’t care for grilled chicken; he liked his chicken marinated and cooked or fried, not grilled. And I knew that he loved chick-peas.

So, what would he do? Would he choose to maximize value-for-money and go for more of the grilled chicken, or would he choose to maximize enjoyment of the salad and go for more of the chickpeas?

The suspense was killing me, but thankfully, I didn’t have to wait for long. He loaded his plate with much more of the grilled chicken than the chickpeas.

Value for money had trumped enjoyment.

As my cousin sat at the table, I turned to him and said, without a hint of sarcasm—well, maybe just a tiny hint of it—, “I hope you enjoy your salad.”

My cousin had exhibited what I call the Fundamental Happiness Paradox. The paradox refers to the idea that, although happiness is one people’s most important goals, people often act in ways that sabotages their own happiness. My colleagues and I have documented the paradox across a variety of contexts, and I am unhappy (sorry, couldn’t resist the chance to pun) to report that the tendency to sabotage one’s own happiness is.

COURSERA

Several years ago my friend David told me about
a website called COURSERA.

He had taken a course or two from the site,
and thought I would enjoy it.
I have since looked at the site many times.
But as with many things,
it was something outside my comfort zone,
so I did not go any farther that just looking.

The last couple of years has shown me that
I can do anything I want to do.
I am capable of doing new things,
and I am the only one holding myself back.
SO..... I decided to do more than just look
at the pretty pictures and take the next step.

The site is full of college and university
courses taught around the world. There is a
huge selection of interests.
Courses to help you further your education or your career.
Courses on a vast assortment of interests,
professional, educational, or just for your
personal learning and enjoyment.

The courses are free to participate in.
If you would like to earn a certificate in the
course you choose, you can pay a fee to receive that as well.
I'm just in this for the fun of learning.
(Kind of like when I became a Realtor.
I didn't love the occupation, but I LOVED the classes.)

Take a look at the website
https://www.coursera.org/

The course I am taking is
"A Life of Happiness and Fulfillment"
 by Prof. Raj Raghunathan
I just finished week one.
Not only did I enjoy week one,
but I have learned so much.
I don't know what other courses will be like.
But I know this is just the first of many
that I will take.

Thought of The Day

Some times life is about risking everything for a dream no one can see but you.

Just one word

I text my daughter almost every day, I wish I would hear just one word.

I WAS SHOCKED

I went to my friends for dinner last night. I had been chatting on the phone with my daughter as I drove there .... I parked down the street a ways from my friends place, due to limited street space when I arrived, then gathered all my things and headed in the house at about  5:45pm.
We had dinner and talked wedding stuff for a bit. Then we went for a drive to look at the chosen HalloWedding party location and gazebo spots. When we got back to thier place, we chatted a bit more, I gathered my things and said goodnight. Their street is not well lit, so it was quite dark as I started to maneuver my Green Giant Tahoe out of the perfect parallel parking spot. It was then that I saw something on my windshield. I was more worried than curious. But I put the Tahoe in park and got out. I walked around the the passenger side and lifted the windshield wiper. Did I mention that it was dark outside? As soon as my fingers touched the soft leather I knew what it was. Someone was kind enough to pick up my wallet, that I must have dropped hours before and leave it somewhere I would find it. The realizing that I had dropped it and someone picked it up for me was surprising. But  I was totally amazed to find all my cards and cash still inside! I wanted to thank the good deed doer, but I had no idea who did this act of kindness. I called my friend on my way home, and told her what had happened. She was as surprised as I was. I arrived home by 10pm, checked my bank accounts and so far, nothing has been touched.
This was a humbling experience. Even in very questionable places, there are good people. Restores your hope for humanity right! I'll pass the kindness forward, and keep living on good karma!

The First Day of Fall

On Thursday, September 22, 2016, at precisely 10:21 a.m. EDT, the Sun will cross the Equator, marking the precise moment of the Autumnal Equinox, or the first official beginning of fall.
So what does that mean? Essentially, our hours of daylight — the period of time each day between sunrise and sunset — have been growing slightly shorter each day since the Summer Solstice on June 20th, which was the longest day of the year in 2016 (at least in terms of daylight). Even after three months of the days growing shorter, we were still seeing more light than darkness over the course of a day. The Autumnal Equinox marks the turning point, when darkness begins to win out over daylight but on the 22nd, the days and nights are approximately equal in length. The word equinoxcomes from the Latin aequus(equal) and nox (night).
So now, for the next three months, our hours of daylight will continue to grow shorter. In December (December 21, 2016, at 5:44 a.m. EST, to be exact), we welcome the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year in terms of hours of daylight.
After the Winter Solstice, the days will begin to grow longer again. It will take another three months, until the Vernal (Spring) Equinox (March 20, 2017, at 6:29 a.m. EDT), for the periods of daylight and darkness to reach equilibrium once again.
From the Vernal Equinox, the days will continue to grow longer, until we reach the Summer Solstice again on June 21, 2017, at 12:24 a.m., EDT, and the cycle starts all over again!
Did you ever wonder…
Why doesn’t the change of seasons happen at the same time every year? Well, to explain, the Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to make one trip around the Sun. This is why we have a leap year every 4 years, to add another day to our calendar to make up for that .25 day, so that there is not a gradual drift of dates through the seasons. For the same reason the exact time of the equinoxes and solstices are not the same each year, and generally will occur about 6 hours later each year, with a jump of a day backwards on leap years.
So no matter what the weather is doing outside your window on the 22nd, this day marks the official start of autumn, and with it, we’ll see the many changes this new season brings, including the leaves changing color!

TRAVELING COMPANIONS

Today, I spoke to a lovely woman
who is going on a business trip.
The trip is to a very beautiful location;
a tropical vacation spot in fact.
As we chatted, I became aware that the anticipation
of the trip was being overshadowed by a
particular traveling companion.
And although there will be many other work
associates on the trip, the one specific associate,
has a way of selfishly manipulating and
tarnishing the positive atmosphere.

As we chit chatted about the upcoming trip,
my delightful traveler chose to be
more positive about the situation.
She said that the unpleasant co-worker,
"Would be a far better
traveling companion than Charles Manson,
or Jeffery Dahmer or even Osama Bin Laden."

And thus...
I commended her on her
positive out look toward the traveling companion
and wished her well on her tropical business trip!

BANANAS

I had an allergic reaction
when eating a banana.
I had never had a problem before that.
The banana was the only thing
I had eaten, so there was no question
that the reaction had come from the fruit.
It had taken three Benadryl  pills
to calm the reaction.
I also had similar reactions to avocado
and fish in that time frame.
So, I just avoided those things
from there forward.
It was so scary and sad.

Recently however,
I had yogurt for breakfast while on a trip.
The first bite told me
"This isn't strawberry yogurt,
this is strawberry banana!"
 So I quickly
read the ingredient list.
It was a good brand of yogurt,
so I was sad to learn it had real bananas
and not just banana flavoring in it.
At that point,
I tossed out the yogurt.
Then I waited to see
if there would be any repercussions.
I always keep several
Benadryl pills with me at all times,
just in case I ever have
another scary reaction.
But nothing happened!

In talking to my daughter a while later,
I told her of this happening.
(She panicked,
she had been with me the day
the banana tried to kill me,
it was scary for her as well.)
I told her that I was going to give
the yellow fruit another try.
She made me promise
that I wouldn't try consuming one
while I was alone.

Just the other night
I was having dinner with friends,
when I noticed bananas on the counter.
I asked if I could have one,
then I put it on my plate.

My friend Kim saw me do this thing,
and knowing of this scary banana allergy,
questioned my logic.
I told her the new development,
and produced two pink Benadryl pills
 from my wallet.

I had the first tiny taste,

I waited several minutes
to see if there would be any reaction.
And there wasn't!
So, I had some more.
Then some more!

It took me about an hour
to finish that banana,
but I wanted to make sure
there was no allergic reaction.

I am pleased to report that all went well.
I had no negative reaction
to the delightful tropical fruit!

I can't tell you how delicious it was,
like tasting one for the first time.
It was so amazingly yummy!

Bananas are now on my grocery list!
I also think I will pick up some
salmon and an avocado just to try!
I am very excited!

Houston

I have a dear friend, whom I met nearly 6 years ago. He lives in Corpus Christi now. We keep in touch, he keeps track of me. We started off our friendship looking for more, but quickly found out that we are great friends, so don't mess up a good thing. The other night he sent me a pic of an eternity band. He wanted to know what I thought. It is beautiful. He is going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. I am  so happy for him, for both of them. She makes him happy, she fills his lonely places, she completes him. Although I found myself feeling very envious, I couldn't be happier!

Happenings Here in Mayberry...,

Tonight I sat down to enjoy dinner and a bit of Nova on PBS ( because I love that kind of educational entertainment...or maybe because I am old? Either way, that was my plan) I would also be chatting with my Life Coach this evening. (Yes, this is how I spend my Wicked Wednesday evening!)
But, from outside I could hear a lot of commotion. It sounded like teenage girls, being loud obnoxious teenage girls. I didn't think much of it. There are new neighbors down the way, they get a bit loud now and then. Just one of the joys of apartment life in Mayberry. Well, the volume got louder and more hysteric.  Until someone screamed "Stop yelling!" I had no desire to intrude on someone else's drama, so I finished dinner and Nova, let the dog out, washed the dishes and headed upstairs.... on the way I looked out the peep hole in the front door. It was dark outside (nearly 8pm), but I could see three sets of headlights angled toward the new neighbors place. Mayberry's finest were here, no need to worry about a thing. I headed upstairs and had my chat with my Life Coach and my world was again spinning in the correct rotation, I looked out the window. The volume was over, people were loitering and deputy Barney Fife was setting things to order. I watched as the sheriffs department left one by one. Those involved were now calm. I had viewed all I could, assured again that there really was nothing to see...and it was dark, so who knows what I was seeing anyway. I took a shower, brushed my teeth and climbed into bed.
What an exciting evening, I am thankful that my Wicked Wednesday evening was drama free.
I'm sure Doc, my next door neighbor, will give me all the neighborhood info tomorrow, so I will be up to date on the happenings here in Mayberry.
