During WWII, President Franklin Roosevelt asked an aid to write instructions for darkening government buildings for an air raid. The aid wrote:
Such preparation shall be made as will completely obscure all Federal buildings and non-Federal buildings occupied by the Federal Government during an air raid for any period of time from visibility by reason of internal or external illumination. Such obscuration may be obtained either by blackout construction or by termination of the illumination.

President Roosevelt rewrote the memo to say:
In case of an air raid, turn out the lights. If you have to keep working, put something over the window.

Louis Crandall drove from Phoenix to visit Disneyland so often that park employees started to recognize him. It was during one of those car rides back that he had a vision: a scaled-down version of that theme park in the Valley.

Saturday With My Kids

I spent yesterday with my kids. As we stood in line waiting for our drinks Cookie asked her brother what the best past of the day was, then she asked me, then we asked her. I am so very grateful to have these two teens in my life. They are amazing! I am very blessed! A Great Saturday!!

Rorke Denver: a Great Role Model

Rorke Denver; Navy Seal spoke at Cookie's graduation. His mother has been the coach at Desert Harbor for years. Rorke is the author of 'Damn Few: Making the Modern SEAL Warrior' and was the lead actor in the movie, 'Act of Valor'.

He spoke to the students about a Life Theseus. The Life Theseus he would have for them would have two parts. Part one is to BE HARD. Fearing nothing. Taking that first step in each new avenue; be brave, confident, strong. Part two is to WORK HARD. Put your whole self into what ever you are going through. Take that on the challenge, be the one that follows through, finish what you start.

Mr Denver told the kids two secrets. The secret to a Pain Free Life is to think of others. The secret to a Rich Life is to always keep good company.

He also told the kids there is a list of things that they each need to do in their life time. He said their parents wouldn't like everything on the list. But he felt they each needed to accomplish everything on the list.
    • Always be on time
    • Use tools
    • Learn to tie knots
    • Learn how to start a fire
    • Learn to drive a stick shift
    • Learn to change a flat
    • Use Vaseline (like if you get a blister from your new shoes, slap some Vaseline on it and you are good to go)
    • Learn to cook a meal. (Even a simple meal. If you start by heating butter and garlic in a pan, no matter what the recipe. Your house will smell great and everyone will love the meal)
    • Read A Lot
    • Manners count, use them
    • Stitches and a cast; everyone needs to go through the experience at least once in their life
    • Be A Hero, even if it is to help someone across the street. You are a hero to them

Rorke Denver was a fabulous speaker, example, role model!!!
