17: World Emoji Day
The ubiquitous texting icons on smart phones,
called
"emoji," were originally developed by
Shigetaka Kurita in
1999 for the launch
of a
mobile internet system, the i-mode, in Japan.
An
emoji is a small digital image used to express an idea,
emotion
or word in an electronic communication.
The
name combines two Japanese words:
"e"
(picture) and "moji" (character).
[I love that this silly bit of technology,
that I never thought I would ever use,
is such a cute way to get across what you
are really thinking, when text is so emotionless.]
