As the game started, first play, the man in front of us was not happy with the team he came to root for. After the second play, he got up and left the bleachers in disgust.
The game went on, it was not good for Reitz. We will say "they just didn't have their heads in the game". The grumbling guy in front of us came back. Still grumbling. By the end of the quarter he had left again, this time for good.
I was shocked. Don't get me wrong, the team has given no reason to cheer, but come on, this is your team, you support them right!???
By the end of the half the visiting bleachers were emptying rapidly. By the end of the game there were very few supporters left in those visiting bleachers. The boys from Reitz had made one touch down at the very end, and yes Central won big. But is that the point? Is that why we go to watch the Friday Nightt High School Football Game?
We had reviewed the stats for each team, they were well matched. They were both local and evenly stocked. So yes it must have been a disappointing game, but why did the fans come? Was it to see their team win? I thought it was to support their team. During the National Anthem, where no one took a knee I might add, I bet every one there would have said they were there to support their school. But yet when the game didn't look good, these supporters has something better to do elsewhere????
Hold it right there: This isn't the NFL this is high school. These were not overpaid, over privileged adults that you paid to cheer for. These are the children in your community. Your Children! We all spent $6 to get into the game, those boys didn't directly get any of that. So what message did this community just send to our impressionable youth? That we are only going to support you if you are winners. We are only going to support you if you make us look good. If you aren't the winners we can't, won't be there for you. What is that??
By the end of the game, the home team was celebrating big time! It was a great win, they played a good game. The same could not be said for the visitors. And the full visitor bleachers now had just a fraction of the "supporting fans" it started out with. As I looked back at where we sat, as we left the stands, they were covered in litter. Not only couldn't the supporters for the visiting team support their team, their school, their children, but they couldn't even pick up their own trash either. Says a lot about the adults out there. But very sadly, it says so much to the children out there too.
Go Team!?! 🏈
