Mistakes are Gifts
http://simplecourage.blogspot.com/
George
Bernard Shaw said: "A life spent making mistakes is not only
more honorable, but more useful than a life spent in doing nothing."
That's an interesting thought, isn't it? Is it true? Can
mistakes actually be honorable? I've been pondering on this
lately, and I think the conclusion that I've come to is: it
depends. Sometimes, a life spent making mistakes translates into a
life of doing nothing and creates a great deal of pain for people
connected to the individual. In other instances, mistakes
become powerful gifts that hold powerful lessons that shape us and
impact us in meaningful ways.
Researchers have found that by the time a person reaches the age of 60, enough "bad experiences" have occurred in a person's life to provide what we call "wisdom". Simply put, wisdom is the ability to know what is and what is not worth being upset about.
For example, being a child of the 80s, I definitely have one or two hairstyles that I would classify as a MISTAKE! My daughters, when looking at some of my childhood photos, have asked more than once "Mom, did you think your hair looked good in that picture?" I usually will laugh and answer that "yes....at the time I actually did think my hair looked good in the picture, but that I realize now it did not! However, with a couple more decades of "wisdom" in my pocket, I know that those embarrassing photos are not worth being upset about.
I wish that bad 80s hairstyles were the sum of mistakes made in my life. However, that is not the case. Those "bad experiences" would not yield enough wisdom to really serve me well. As I review my life inventory, I can find many more critical mistakes I have made that have led to more meaningful and useful wisdom. These include judging another person too harshly or continually trusting somebody who is not trustworthy. They include being determined to make something happen, when the best course was actually not the one I was so determined to pursue. They include risks I was too scared to take and putting energy into pursuits or relationships that really didn't matter. They include times I acted with recklessness and times when I was not compassionate....either with myself or somebody else. They include times that I was hurting and thereby ended up hurting somebody else. In recovery, we refer to this inventory of painful moments we walk back and review as the dark night of the soul. It is a necessary step in stripping away denial and facing the dark and secret side of the self. It's an opportunity to meet the shadows on the wall and to uncover the unbearable truths they conceal. It requires sorting through all of your feelings and experiences. It requires taking full responsibility for yourself. Without this step we are unable to harvest the important lessons our history holds. This is the process in which our mistakes transform into gifts. To leave this step undone, is to spend a lifetime doing nothing. This process teaches us a way of focusing on what we can take away from every experience and prepares us for profound, meaningful change. In recovery, we call these opportunities "wake-up calls."
Several years ago, on a warm August evening, I was sitting on my front porch by myself, listening to the sounds of my neighborhood....the lawn mowers, neighbor kids playing, the sound of skateboards on sidewalks. It had been a typical hot August day and I was feeling drained and exhausted. It had also been the day of my father's funeral. As I sat and contemplated on the events of the day, the past week, the previous years of my life and of my father's life, I was experiencing profound sorrow. My father had lived a life of mistakes that at the end, translated into a life spent doing nothing. It was painful to be in a relationship with my father. It hurt. As I contemplated on the wounds this created in my life, I asked myself a painful and poignant question: Based on the wounds I experienced as a child, and the behaviors that sprang from those wounds....I wonder what it's like to be in a relationship with me? More important, I wondered what it was like for my children to be my children. That led to some honest conversations with each of my kids, which had mixed reviews. I learned that I hold back. That they feel loved, yet they also had experienced my being guarded, protecting myself so that I don't get hurt....which is a technique I learned as a young child. I learned that they love me and they know I love them, but they also feel when I hold back. This wasn't something I intended to do with my children. Intellectually I know I am an adult, but intellect wasn't enough to move me out of childhood wounds, beliefs or behaviors. I am grateful they had the courage to be open and lovingly honest. (We all have room for improvement, right?) After my conversations with my girls, I went to my husband and had a similar conversation with him. The truth about myself emerged in a deep way and brought with it profound resolve. Nothing brings focus like pain.
It was then that the light began to dawn over this vast reservoir of love deep within me that was layered over by wounds of the past. I had a whole new appreciation for how precious pain is. I began to see that only by experiencing the pain could I begin to create a life of my own choosing. Mistakes of the past served as the content for wisdom going forward. That was a wake-up call that brought me to a deeper understanding of who I am and how I am and gave me options for being different. The gifts that came from the difficult conversations are precious to me. I am grateful I was able to begin the process of changing the mistakes I was making and thereby deepening the relationships I have. Since that day, the wake-up calls continue and the process of creating a life of my choosing is never ending. I don't know that answering the wake-up calls has gotten easier. What I do know is that to do so yields rich rewards.

BLACK FRIDAY
Instead....I went to breakfast with Marge! I think she must be my Fairy God Mother of sorts. She is such a wonderful friend. I love her. She helps me see things clearly, and let's me know it's okay to change and enjoy. She told me to "Enjoy the Adventure!" And when I told her of my Christmas dilemma (past, present and future) she said "Leave it behind! Start over together, new." She knew what I was feeling, she knew just what to tell me. I love her...did I say that already!
Then I came home and had a three hour nap! I like Black Friday!!

AMERICA
I believe that America was built on Hard Work,
Family Values, Loyalty and Patriotism.
I think that our government is taking those elements out of our countries foundation....
With out these vital elements, we have nothing to build a strong nation upon. I think we need to put back what our forefathers started us out with.
To rebuild a strong society I believe WE need to Speak Kind Words, Be Respectful, Give Unconditional Service and Love More.
Back to the basics.

THANK YOU
A
word of thanks to those in my life.
When
the path gets bumpy,
I
am amazed how many great friends I have.
Those
that hold me when I cry,
those
that laugh because they see
what
I do not at the moment,
those
that provide the helping hand
to
help me across the muck and mire.
To
those that listen,
and those that say what they see.
To
those that encourage and
those
that play the devils advocate.
To
those that see me for who I am,
and
those who help me see myself
through their eyes.
I
am amazed how many great friends I have.
I
am amazed at how loved I am.
THANK
YOU!

DEMONS ......I love this one!
"Demons"
When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale
I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Curtain’s call
Is the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl
So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you've made
Don't wanna let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don't wanna hide the truth
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go
Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close

COUNTING STARS
"Counting Stars"
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Yeah, we'll be counting stars
[Verse 1]
I see this life
Like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
In my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and ye shall find
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told
I feel something so right
By doing the wrong thing
And I feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
I could lie, could lie, could lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
[Verse 2]
I feel the love
And I feel it burn
Down this river every turn
Hope is a four letter word
Make that money
Watch it burn
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told
And I feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
I could lie, could lie, could lie
Everything that downs me makes me wanna fly
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
[Bridge 4x:]
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sink in the river
The lessons I learned
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars

ZAC BROWN BAND
"Chicken Fried"
You know I like my chicken fried
And cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio on
Well I was raised up beneath the shade of a Georgia Pine
And that's home you know
Sweet tea, pecan pie, and homemade wine
Where the peaches grow
And my house it's not much to talk about
But it's filled with love that's grown in southern ground
And a little bit of chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio on
I love to see the sun rise
See the love in my woman's eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother's love
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live, what you drive or the price tag on your clothes
There's no dollar sign on a peace of mind, this I've come to know
So if you agree, have a drink with me,
Raise you glasses for a toast
To a little bit of chicken fried
And cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio on
I love to see the sun rise
See the love in my woman's eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother's love
I thank god for my life
And for the stars and stripes
May freedom forever fly, let it ring.
Salute the ones who died
The ones that give their lives
So we don't have to sacrifice
All the things we love
Like our chicken fried
And cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio on
I love to see the sun rise
See the love in my woman's eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother's love
Get a little chicken fried

IT'S GETTING CHILLY
When my son got home from his study group tonight, he said "It's getting chilly!"
Then I heard him tell his sister "You may want to wear a jacket tomorrow, it's getting chilly!"
I love that he notices little things, I love that he takes care of his baby sister!

HOME
"Home"
(originally by Michael Buble)
Another summer day has come and gone away
In Paris and Rome
But I want to go home
May be surrounded by a million people I,
Still feel all alone
I want to go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
And I've been keeping all the letters that I
wrote to you
Each one a line or two
I'm fine baby, how are you
I would send 'em but I know that it's just not enough
My words were cold and flat and you deserve more than that
Another airplane, another sunny place
I'm lucky I know, but I wanna go home
I've got to home
Let me go home
I'm just to far from where you are, I want to come home
And I feel just like I'm living someone else's life
It's like I just stepped outside when everything was going right
And I know just why you could not come along with me
This was not your dream
But you always believed in me
Another winter day has come and gone away
In even Paris and Rome
And I wanna go home,
Let me go home
And I'm surrounded by a million people I,
Still feel alone and I want to go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
Let me go home
I've had my run,
Baby I'm done
I'm coming back home
Let me go home
It'll all be alright,
I'll be home tonight
I'm coming back home
In Paris and Rome
But I want to go home
May be surrounded by a million people I,
Still feel all alone
I want to go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
And I've been keeping all the letters that I
wrote to you
Each one a line or two
I'm fine baby, how are you
I would send 'em but I know that it's just not enough
My words were cold and flat and you deserve more than that
Another airplane, another sunny place
I'm lucky I know, but I wanna go home

LEAVE THE REST BEHIND
“No one does it all. We each, if we're lucky, will have our chance to leave a mark on the world, but we are trying too hard to be perfect. So don't emulate Wonder Woman; think about what's wonderful to you instead. Then boldly, audaciously, joyfully, leave the rest behind."

136 Miles Drive
I love Phoenix, it will always be my home town.
I took a drive Saturday. I have taken this same drive many times before, seen the same things many times. But lately I am reminded to be appreciative of them all.
Cookie went with me on my drive. She manned the stereo and sang along as the wind thrashed her hair. When life gets a bit stress full she asks for a drive at night. She loves to see the city lights. Just like her mamma I guess.
The thermometer said it was 90 degrees and here in Phoenix we call that Fall! The freeway was packed, there was a lot of traffic for a Saturday afternoon. I drove with the windows down and my hair pulled up, my curls were blowing at my sun glasses, but it felt great. Nickelback was on the stereo, loud enough to be heard over the traffic and the screaming wind.
Our drive took us through town, through the tunnel, from one end of town to the other, then out of town as well. I have always loved a drive around town, it's comfortable, grounding.
I love the mountains that surround the valley. I love seeing the skyline, the old and new buildings, the landmarks. I want to take photos as I drive, so I can keep the view. The sight of Camelback mountain from Firebird Lake is Wonderful.
Phoenix has grown so vast in my lifetime; I remember watching Metro Center being built, I remember Ledgend City, I remember when the outskirts of town weren't so far out and farm land stretched for miles.
As I drove past Sky Harbor I watched a plane take off. I hoped that there was someone on there that was as excited as I was when I headed to Kentucky. I hoped that they would find everything they were looking for, like I did.
As I headed back home, I noticed the drop in temperature as I drove past the few remaining bits of farmed land on the west 101. The smell of farming has always made me happy; it's cool and sweet. I always ask my kids if they know whats growing in the fields, and surprisingly to me, they do. I see that Phoenix is their home town too!

B.S. of America
Jessette and Cole went to the grocery,
on the way out boy scouts were at the door.
Jessette got all excited,
then she found out that boy scouts
don't sell cookies.
She said she can't support an organization
that isn't run correctly.
She says the boy scouts are a fraud.

.....In My Dreams
I woke up to my name being called.
A familiar voice, comfortable and loved.
I knew I was safe and I would be taken care of.
I listened, still in that state of sleepiness, where everthing is sureal.
Was this real or was this a dream.........
..............................Bliss, Delight.
Then I heard the door close, the sounds of industry flooded my ears.
I remember yawing, knowing I would be watched over, from afar,
Knowing I was safe, cared for, loved.
Knowing I would be thought of throughout the week to come.
The breeze touched my skin, I snuggled into my comfortor and
I was asleep.
A familiar voice, comfortable and loved.
I knew I was safe and I would be taken care of.

What A Lot
PIERCE, Neb. (AP) — A handful of barely driven vintage Chevrolets fetched more than half a million dollars on Saturday at an auction that drew thousands of car buffs from around the world to a small northeast Nebraska town.
Bidders and gawkers crowded shoulder-to-shoulder for the auction in a muddy field just west of Pierce, a town of about 1,800. Spectators in helicopters and airplanes circled overhead as the lead auctioneer, Yvette VanDerBrink, inched down the auction line on a wooden platform hauled by a pickup.
Event organizers said an estimated 10,000 people traveled from as far as Norway and Brazil to see the sale in person, and more than 3,800 had registered online to bid at an auction website by mid-day Saturday.
The auction of more than 500 old cars and pickups was expected to continue on Sunday. Organizers said they hadn't yet totaled the bids for the roughly 50 most high-profile, low-mileageclassic cars and trucks, which were auctioned on Saturday. As of midday, six of the most valuable models had sold for a combined $545,000.
The collection belonged to Ray Lambrecht and his wife, Mildred, who ran a Chevrolet dealership in downtown Pierce for five decades before retiring in 1996. Unlike most dealers, Ray Lambrecht stashed many of his unsold cars in a warehouse, at his farm and other spots around town if they didn't sell in the first year.
The first vehicle sold — a sky-blue, 1958 Chevy Cameo pickup driven 1.3 miles — secured the largest bid at $140,000. Another bidder spent $97,500 on a red and white 1963 Impala with 11.4 miles on its odometer, the manufacturer's plastic on the seat and a yellow typewritten window sticker displaying its original price: $3,254.70.
Lyle Buckhouse, a retired farmer from Hankerson, N.D., poked his head Saturday into a 1963Chevy Corvair with 17.2 miles on the odometer. Moments later, the self-proclaimed "Corvair guy" was hunting eagerly for the bidder-registration tent.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Buckhouse said. "That's why I came down here. You just don't know what you're going to see."
Bob Esler, the owner of Bob's Garage in Westfield, Ind., bought a four-door 1964 Bel Air station wagon for $30,000. The car had 326 miles.
"This is one of the cars that I had my eyes on," Esler said, as he leaned against his new purchase. "I want to use it to haul all of my customers around."
"How are you getting it back home?" a friend asked.
Esler shrugged. "I haven't figured that out yet," he said.
Preparations for the two-day auction began in June. VanDerBrink, the auctioneer, said she took calls from as far as Iceland, Singapore and Brazil before the event.
The two least-driven cars, a 1959 Bel Air and a 1960 Corvair Monza, have one mile on their odometer. The oldest vehicle with fewer than 20 miles dates to 1958; the newest is a 1980 Monza with nine miles.
Some bidders used the auction to hunt for rare parts for their collector cars and trucks, while others came to watch the spectacle.
"What drew us here as much as anything was the story," said Ernie Turcotte, who drove with his son, Jeff, from central Massachusetts to look for fenders and running boards for his 1955 Ford F-100. "I don't understand how it even happened. But here they are."
Ray Lambrecht opened the downtown dealership with his uncle in 1946, on the corner of Main Street and Nebraska Highway 13. The U.S. Army veteran quickly established himself as an unusual salesman: He gave his lowest price up front, without negotiation, and encouraged hagglers to try to find a better deal elsewhere.
In 1954, he drove then-Gov. Robert Crosby down Main Street in a parade celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Nebraska as a territory.
The most valuable vehicles were stored for decades at a nearby warehouse, until a heavy snow collapsed the roof. Some were damaged, but many were saved and moved elsewhere. The models at the dealership were among the best preserved, even as the building gave way to bats and holes in the roof.
Ray and his wife, Mildred, retired in 1996. Ray, 95, and Mildred, 92, still live in Pierce, but their health has declined. They decided to sell the collection so others could enjoy the cars and pickups, said their daughter, Jeannie Stillwell, who lives in Florida.
