TEA DANCE

The other day a client was in my office and we were talking about the the next place to travel to. We talked about his bucket list of new places and his favorite spots he has already been. He told me of the trip he took to Providence, RI. He told me about the working lobster boats and the cobble stone streets. He told me how much fun he had watching all the people at the Tea Dances. The costumes, the atmosphere, the welcoming happy environment. I had never heard of a Tea Dance, so I looked it up.

Tea Dance Steeped in Rich History

Throughout time, dancing and tea have been the greatest of partners. You can trace the lineage of tea dances all the way back to the 18th century set in the beautiful gardens of London, England. These festivities were filled with music, theatrical masquerades, and of course dancing.

As the ritual of afternoon tea gained in popularity in the 19th century, hosts and hostesses would add more than just tea to the menu. While taking breaks from dancing, you could sip champagne, eat small pastries and sandwiches.

In 1912, Buenos Aires introduced London to the sultry and seductive dance of The Tango. The hype of the tango has grown nearly overnight. People were eager to learn the steps of the new dance and show off their new skills on the dance floor.
Hotels and restaurant owners took notice of the dance frenzy and shuffled tables around to make additional room for dancing.

The thought of dancing during teatime caught the attention of society and its popularity grew strong. Due to the two world wars and changing lifestyles not much time was left for afternoon tea accompanied with dancing.

Fast forward to a more modern era and you would see that the tea dance has evolved. No longer reserved for higher class societies. Today you can find all types of people from many diverse groups taking part in the afternoon dance party.

It wasn’t until the early 1980s that tea dances began to spark interest again not just in London but throughout the world.

In more recent times, tea dances are found not just in hotels or restaurants. Today you can find many dance studios that specialize in dance lessons and classes hosting weekly or monthly tea dances at their ballroom dance studio.

These dances provide excellent opportunities to practice your dance skills, observe other people dancing and to socialize.

Some of the common dances you would be dancing at a tea dance would be tango, waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha and more.

Tonight is the longest night of the year and the first day of Winter.

Although the winter solstice means the start of winter, it also means the return of more sunlight. It only gets brighter from here!

I was driving a two lane road out in the country the other day, when I passed a red pickup at the side of the road. The driver had white hair and a really nice white beard. All I could think was Naughty or Nice?!

Made me giggle as I drive down the road! I should be keeping a list or something!

 I walked out to grab something from my car a few minutes ago and it was SNOWING! Maybe it was just teeny tiny flurries but it’s snowing! I am a very happy girl!

HAWAIIAN HOLIDAY PARTY

Last night we went to a Christmas Party at our local Harley spot. Saw some riders we knew and some of my clients as well. It was by invitation only and I thought that was nice. They had a Hawaiian Shirt contest. I bought John this one and thought it was a winner!!!

WISDOM IN TRAVEL

BELIEVING

Even though she was a grown woman, she believed in elves & Santa Claus & flying reindeer & sacks with an endless capacity of toys. Furthermore, she believed that believing in these things was the chief reason that she had more fun in life than others.

CREPES

When I was a girl, my friend Terry’s mom made crepes for dinner one night when I was over. 

It was the first time had ever had crepes. I was delighted, asparagus crepes were so fancy and so delicious. 

In my culinary class several years later, Ms Charlotte Searls taught me to make crepes. And I will never forget how she said to not be discouraged, you always need to toss out the first one, because it never turns out right. 

Then when my children were young, I made them at home. I filled them with saucy chicken and they were so good. 

It has been a very long time since I have made them and I am glad I don’t have to tell my culinary mentor that I tossed out the first 3! But when I got the consistency right, they started to stack up perfectly. 

Tonight my crepes are savory, no sweets this evening. But I am pleased to say that this simple thing makes my heart happy.
