MEMPHIS

I met a young man a few weeks ago, I actually got to meet his whole family. We were all at a party where I was the new comer, which made it easy for me to watch and listen and learn.
This young man’s name is Memphis. When he bounded into the kitchen to give his surrogate grandmother some love, I noticed the sunburn on his arms. Shortly after his arrival I met the rest of his family.
As our party lasted on through the afternoon and evening, thanks to our wonderful hosts, I had plenty of opportunity to take in more about this charming family and their son.
I learned that Memphis had spent the morning volunteering with a children’s group. They were fishing! Many of the children had never been fishing before. Memphis was there to assist, teach, and retrieve a fish or two from the murky overgrown shallows. He said they even took photos of the best catches. The most photogenic fish only had one eye!
I learned from his mom that volunteering, taking part in fund raising and general being a part of whatever is happening is where you will find her son. I saw that evening, that he was just a good hearted, fun, helpful boy. At 15, he was willing to help whenever asked, he fit in the conversation with the adults, he charmed and occupied the 18 month old little guy like they were best friends.
Never once did I see the teen age side of Memphis that we often witness in our youth, that makes us sad for the future. Not at all. If Memphis is a symbol of the generation to come, I am breathing a sigh of relief!
This is a great young man.
His older sister is finishing a college degree in becoming a Farrier. In a field dominated by men, I applaud this beautiful young woman for her choice and her passion!
As the party came to an end, we said our goodnight. But to these young people’s parents I made a point to let them know what a great job they have done as parents. At this point in time children don’t grow up to be great if left to be feral. It takes good parents, surrogate grandparents and a village.
Bravo!!!
